Brought Back My Son

I went to Ward 54 SGH to visit my son, with my wife and determined to bring him back home today. I had brought a bottle of honey from home and dipped abit of honey to my son's tongue as in Prophet Muhamed(pbuh) sunnah and immediately there was a change in his face color. Obiously he was loving the sweet taste of honey and my wife informed me that she was ready to give mother's milk after eating all the herbs yesterday and the herbs really helped. My son was fed mother's milk for the first time and he did not throw up the after dinking mother's milk. Allah says in the Holy Quran to feed babies only mother's milk and how true it is for medical experts totally agree on mother's milk being the best nutrition for babies and surely Almighty Allah swt, the creater of the universe knows what is best for his creations.

The Doctor at ward 54 wanted to keep my son for one more day, but I resisted and told the doctor that he is drinking mother's milk and the doctor after some observation agreed to discharge my son. My son has been feeding on mother's milk so far and Alhamdulilah (editor's note: Gods Grace) he has not been vomitting out the milk.

At 3pm, my son was discharged from the hospital.

My wife was not ready to nurse our baby as yet and so with a bit of disappointment I came back home with my wife from the Hospital. At the same time, I told myself that my son was in good hands to assure myself and my wife.

My Baby Son was Born

My Baby Son arrived ahead of schedule on 21 Aug 2005 at 1910hrs. He was early by 3 weeks and caught all of us by surprise, nevertheless Alhamdulilah (editors note: God's Blessings) my son was born without any complications. I am now a proud father of a handsome baby boy and all Glory be to Allah for giving me such joy and treasure.

I was in the labor ward with my wife when she was having labor pain and I believe every husband should be beside the wife to witness the pain and agony the wife goes through before delivery and the euphoria upon birth. I had an avalanche of feelings during the delivery process which lasted nearly 4 hours and the caregiver initially estimated the delivery to take at least 8 hours.

My wife informd me in the morning that she was having stomach pain through out the night and I suggested to her that we go to the hospital straight away but my wife declined saying it might be just stomach cramps and nothing else since our babies estimated delivery was on the 8th sep 2005. By 2 pm I could see that my wife was in obvious pain so I made the decision to bring her to SGH Hospital and took a taxi at about 2.30pm. In the taxi the pain was increasing and I was regretting not bringing my wife to the hospital earlier. We reached SGH A&E at 2.45pm and was referred to the O&G centre. The nurse from O&G infd me that my wife was having labor pain and need to be warded.

My wife decided to walk to the ward instead of being brought in a wheelchair and once in the ward laid down for a while, till the labor pain was coming in shorter intervals. The nurse infd that we can proceed to the labor ward if the pain becomes unbearable and I decided to bring my wife to the labor ward.

In the labor ward my wife was made to lye down on the labor bed and wires were attached to her stomach which measured her pain level and the baby's heart beat and the readings were displayed on a monitor beside the bed and we could also hear the heart beat sound of our baby coming out from the machine. The time was about 4.30pm and the nurse told me delivery will be about 7 hours away as the cervix is about 3cm and delivery will happen when the cervix is about 10cm. 7 long hours I thought to myself and I could see that my wife was already in much pain. My wife was given the laughing gas to inhale once the pain came and by now my wife was experiencing waves of pain and all I could do was to hold her hand and comfort her at the same time wishing that I could somehow share the pain. The time was about 5pm and every minute seemed like an hour to pass.

The time is 6pm and the labor pain was increasing, My wife and I was educated on the various option of pain relief. One was the epidural injection on the spine which will very much reduce the pain of the contractions. The other option was a pain killer injection to the thighs and the third option was to go cold turkey. My wife and I decided to take the second option even though it was not as effective as the epiduaral.

The time is 7pm and the cervix has dilated to 8cm and my wife was in much pain and our regular doctor who was paged by the staff of O&G has not arrived yet. My wife was very much disoriented and I had to guide her by telling her to breathe in the laughing gas by the nose and breathe out by the mouth. The gas was having very little effect on her and she was in much pain at this time. I started to recite the verses that I know from the Quran to her and kept reassuring her that its going to be over soon but at the back of my head, I knew the labor will take at least another 4 hours as the nurse had informed me earlier that the delivery will be around 11pm.

The time is 7.30pm and our doctor has arrived. The doctor informed me that the cervix has dilated to 9 cm and the water bag has burst and I could see the water and blood oozing out. Now we are in the second and critical stage of labor. The stage for delivery is set. The doctor informed me that my wife is ready to give birth and asked her to push. My wife was already in much pain and very tired and I could see that she had very little strenghth left in her body. I started to give the encourgement to push and the doctor started to say that she could see the baby's head and I glanced over and saw the hair on my baby's head. Excited, I told my wife delivery is eminent and asked her to give all her best. The doctor decided that an episitomy had to be performed as my baby's heart beat became irregualar. I saw the doctor taking a big scissors and started to perform episitomy. Things were starting to move fast at this point.

After the episitomy, my wife was asked to push again, and I could see my wife was giving all her best and the nurse was assisting by putting her hands on my wife's stomach and pushing the stomach. Amid the chaos, the doctor confidently informed my baby's head is out and quickly whisked him out. It was a moment of pure joy and relieve and quickly shouted onto my wife's ear she has given birth to a beautiful baby boy. The nurse held the baby up and I could see my boy open his eyes and look at me and I thanked Allah for the successful birth. The baby was then brought to the next table to be cleaned up but the pain for my wife was not over yet as the episiotomy cut need to be stiched up. I held her hand and told her what a brave woman she is and she had just gave birth to healthy son. She just kept saying 'Allah' throughout.

My wife was stiched and cleaned up and dinner was served. My wife had no strength left even to eat and informed me that she is unable to nurse the baby as such I told the nurse to give my baby bottle milk instead. I am so happy that both mother and child was safe during delivery due to the grace of Allah. I was simply awed at the process of birth and nothing could prepare me for what I experienced, however there are excellent websites that provides useful information on pregnancy and I particully liked BabyCentre.com.

May Allah swt bless my beloved son,Ameen
